Choose ONE of the topics below to write a 4-5-page essay. Your goals in this essay are to
demonstrate that you can summarize, analyze, and critique Epstein’s argument. Note 1: “critiquing”
does NOT include writing whether you like his book or think it’s boring; instead, you’re looking for
holes, conflicts, contradictions, faulty logic, unacknowledged assumptions, etc. Note 2: your essay
should include ideas and examples from as many different parts of the book as are relevant to your topic,
not just the one chapter that focuses on it. Note 3: because the arguments in his book are intertwined, the
topics are somewhat overlapping; so it’s acceptable if your response to one topic takes you into another.
The emphasis in your essay–that is, your main argument–however, should remain focused on the topic
you have chosen.. You are not required to do any outside research for this essay, but if you do, you must
document your sources. Follow all MLA formatting rule.
